The report reviews both published and unpublished reports, materials and research, as well as health and social determinants data. The findings highlight how people who are repeatedly exposed to racism during their daily lives, or when using essential services, experience worse physical and mental health.

Patient-level cost data has significant potential as a way to understand the equity of health care provision, as it can be analysed by indices of deprivation, health conditions and treatments at a granular level. Costing practitioners have skills and experience in working with patient-level data and can be a great resource for their organisation, using analytical prowess to develop increased benefit to patients. Working on health equity is also a good way to engage clinicians and address priorities, leading to greater awareness of how cost data can be used. This briefing shares the themes found by costing teams as they work with clinical and service colleagues to address health inequalities, illustrating the themes with practical examples.

According to this report by the NHS Confederation, Create Health Foundation and London Economics, an additional 1 invested in obstetrics and gynaecology services per woman in England could generate an estimated 319 million return to the economy. This equates to a return on investment of 11 per woman in England for every additional 1 invested in obstetrics and gynaecology services. The report reveals the high costs to the economy of women being unable to work due to a range of conditions (including heavy and painful periods, endometriosis, fibroids and ovarian cysts) not being treated effectively.

This long read looks at what the NHS will gain from strengthening clinical leadership and management, the challenges involved in doing so, and how they might be overcome. It draws on 30 interviews carried out with hospital-based clinician leaders and managers in the UK and the USA in 2022-23 and relevant academic studies. The US interviewees are based in clinically led academic medical centres, while the UK interviewees work in large teaching and district general hospital-based NHS trusts that have sought to strengthen their clinical leadership and management.

Drug companies often talk to patients about making new medicines. This is called patient engagement. It helps to ensure that new medicines are right for the patients who will take them. Patient engagement is useful, but it does not always happen. Sometimes, companies make important decisions without involving patients. All drug companies need to understand why it is important to listen and learn what patients need. We made a practical way to measure this value. Our team included people from Novartis (a drug company), and patient groups. We developed a structure called the 'framework'.
