Workers tasked with specific responsibilities around patient and public involvement (PPI) are now routinely part of the organizational landscape for applied health research in the United Kingdom. Even as the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has had a pioneering role in developing a robust PPI infrastructure for publicly funded health research in the United Kingdom, considerable barriers remain to embedding substan tive and sustainable public input in the design and delivery of research. Notably, researchers and clinicians report a tension between funders' orientation towards deliverables and the resources and labour required to embed public involvement in research. These and other tensions require further investigation.

The national Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) Programme is now in its third year and has approved 170 CDC sites across England. This guidance sets out next steps and best practice for systems on developing CDCs, including sections on commissioning, governance, engagement, regulatory and accreditation requirements, digital connectivity, workforce and pathway development.

Same day emergency care (SDEC) allows specialists, where appropriate, to assess, diagnose and treat patients on the same day of arrival who would otherwise have been admitted to hospital. This specification defines what should be delivered as part of the SDEC service. It includes links to reference documents and metrics for measurement (the desired outcomes and outputs) so that safe, effective same day services are delivered across health care systems to deliver urgent and emergency care (UEC) services.

Healthwatch were kindly invited to attend the Voices Heard Foster event on Wednesday 29th May at Coneygre Community Centre in Tipton. The event was a celebration of Foster caring in Sandwell and an information and promotion event showcasing local support services. But mostly important, it gave both foster carers and fostered children an opportunity to share their experiences. We were able to talk to foster parents about some of the challenges that they face in accessing services to support their fostered child or children
