Time to act, a new review of kidney health inequalities

This report comes five years after Kidney Research UK's previous report of kidney health inequalities outlined recommendations for change in clinical and research practice. The new review exposes limited progress since 2018. It confirms that some communities are still impacted more by kidney disease than others, and disease progresses faster in some people. The report concludes that quality of care can vary and that a lack of focus on some groups of people in research studies means that their needs and experiences are overlooked.

According to the results of this survey, people needing more intense care and support after hospital are pushing local councils to overspend. For example, the survey reveals a 7.5% increase in the number of people requiring multiple visits from two or more care workers, called 'double-handed care' since last year, now totalling 49,000 people. As more care workers are needed to provide care and support to people with complex needs, costs to councils are increasing.

Over the last year (2023-2024) we've received increased feedback about local audiology services, including challenges in obtaining treatment for a build-up of earwax. We heard this through enquiries to our Information and Signposting service, Hot Topic meetings and engagement undertaken as part our 2022 Eastbourne Listening Tour. We designed a short survey to capture an increased range of experiences to help further our understanding of this theme and identify areas for further development.
